Menstrual Blood Colors
The color of your menstrual blood isn’t just a random observation… it’s actually an important signal from your body trying to tell you something.
Just like your period reflects your overall health, the color of the blood can reveal a lot about your hormonal and physical well-being.
Here’s what each color might mean:
- Black
Usually appears at the beginning or end of your period. It’s old blood that stayed in the uterus and oxidized — generally normal.
But if it comes with unusual discharge or a bad smell, it might signal a blockage or an issue that needs medical attention. - Dark Brown
Very similar — it’s old blood that’s been in the uterus for a while. Common at the start or end of your period. - Dark Red (with clots)
If you see large or frequent clots, it could be a sign of hormonal imbalance or uterine fibroids. - Pink
Often a sign of low estrogen levels.
It could also be caused by poor nutrition or extremely intense workouts. - Bright Red
A sign of a healthy, regular cycle — this is considered the normal color. - Orange
If there’s a strange odor or unusual discharge, it might indicate an infection or a sexually transmitted disease (STD).
If it appears as light brown-orange after ovulation, it could be an early sign of pregnancy. - Gray
⚠️ Warning: This is usually not normal and may indicate a serious infection or even miscarriage — seek medical help immediately.
Important Note:
Every body is different. What’s normal for one person might be a warning sign for another!
Keeping track of these changes could help you catch problems early and protect your health.
