Where a fibroid is located can change everything

Where does a fibroid usually appear? And does the location matter?

Yes, it matters a lot… because the location of the fibroid determines the symptoms you might feel, and it also affects pregnancy, your period, and your overall health.

Here are the main types of fibroid locations:

  1. In the uterine wall (Intramural)
    • This is the most common type.
    • It grows within the muscular wall of the uterus.
    • It may cause uterine enlargement and increase pain during periods or intercourse.
  2. Inside the uterine cavity (Submucosal)
    • This is the most serious when trying to get pregnant because it affects embryo implantation and causes heavy bleeding.
    • It’s sometimes misdiagnosed as a uterine polyp or thickened endometrial lining.
  3. Outside the uterus (Subserosal)
    • Grows outward toward the abdominal cavity.
    • Doesn’t directly affect menstruation but can press on other organs like the bladder or intestines.
    • If it twists on itself, it can cause sudden, severe pain.
  4. In the cervix (Cervical)
    • Rare, but very sensitive.
    • Can cause problems with urination, bowel movements, and severe pain during intercourse.
    • Requires very careful management.

Can fibroids appear in more than one location at the same time?

Absolutely! A woman can have multiple fibroids in different locations, which is why symptoms can vary and sometimes be confusing.
