Simple Reasons for a Late Period
Period late? When should you start worrying and consider seeing a doctor?
A lot of people get anxious if their period is even a day or two late, but the truth is—your body usually has its reasons.
If your cycle is usually regular:
A delay of more than 5 to 7 days is worth checking.
If your cycle is irregular:
Delays might be normal, but it’s still a good idea to look into the possible causes.
Could it be pregnancy?
Definitely, especially if you’re sexually active.
First step: Take a home pregnancy test or a blood test to confirm or rule it out.
What else can cause a delayed period?
- Weight changes: Gaining, losing, or fluctuating weight.
(Especially if your BMI is over 25.) - Stress and mental pressure: Work, studies, or emotional shock.
- Physical trauma: Like an accident, surgery, a strong cold, or respiratory issues.
- Irregular sleep or overexertion.
- Travel or climate changes.
- Birth control methods: Whether you’ve just started or recently stopped using them.
- Smoking (even passive smoking): Affects hormones and ovulation.
- Being over 40: Could be the beginning of perimenopause.
