Symptoms of High Prolactin (Hyperprolactinemia) — and Who Should Get Tested?
Not every woman with high prolactin levels experiences symptoms!
Some women have elevated levels but feel completely fine — that’s why it’s important to know when to monitor and when to be concerned.
Let’s break it down simply:
✅ Normal prolactin levels in blood: less than 25 ng/mL.
✅ 25–50 ng/mL? Might affect fertility, but menstrual cycles often remain regular.
✅ 50–100 ng/mL? Menstrual cycles may become irregular or delayed.
✅ Above 100 ng/mL? Symptoms similar to menopause may appear (like absent periods and hot flashes).
When should you get tested?
If you have any of these symptoms:
- Irregular or delayed periods.
- Milky nipple discharge (even though you’re not breastfeeding).
- Difficulty conceiving or signs of weak ovulation.
- Vaginal dryness or low libido.
- Hot flashes or menopause-like symptoms (especially if levels are over 100 ng/mL).
- In some cases: chronic headaches or vision problems (if caused by a benign pituitary tumor).
Also important:
In some cases, prolactin levels are high without any obvious symptoms!
That’s why doing the test is crucial if you feel something is off or abnormal.
